1969 Jose Ramirez 1A AM Classical - Sister Guitar to Andres Segovia's in Sanford, Florida

$10,000

Here is a very good condition, 1969 Jose Ramirez III Brazilian Rosewood Concert Classical Guitar Model 1A.This is one of rare Ramirez 1As built by Antonio Martinez in 1969. Antonio Martinez was the builder of Andres Segovia's world famous 1969 1A guitar. This instrument was made from the same series of Brazilian Rosewood sets as the Segovia 1A and bears a similar grain pattern and tonal properties. Antonio Martinez would have made somewhere between 12 and 20 1A guitars in 1969, as he was one of the most highly regarded builders in the Ramirez shop during that period. It is difficult to say how many of these 1969 Segovia Sister guitars remain after more than 50 years. Well known luthiers have attempted to copy the 1969 Segovia 1A, but there will never be anything closer than this instrument and the others made of these rosewood sets in the same year by Antonio Martinez. This Ramirez 1A has excellent power and tone, as you would expect from master builder Antonio Martinez. The design of the 1A guitar was developed by Jose Ramirez the Third, specifically for the requirements of Andres Segovia and with the Maestro's guidance. This guitar is a splendid combination of Spanish and Orchestral tone. The overall condition of the guitar is very good. There were hairline cracks on each side of the back, nearer the center than the edges. They have been professionally repaired for strength while maintaining the original resonance of the instrument. There was one tight hairline in the soundboard, behind the bridge and one on each edge of the fretboard. These have also been well repaired and are quite sound. There were strap buttons installed at one time in the heel and tail block, that have been removed and carefully filled in with the appropriate woods. There were a couple of surface stress lines in the rosewood at the tail block, where a pickup output jack was installed. They have been carefully repaired as well. The old outdated pickup system was removed and a new unintrusive to tone pickup (passive with no battery used) was installed. A subtle antique bronze finish output jack was used to match the aesthetic of this vintage instrument. At some point in the guitar's life, the bridge was professionally repaired and updated to a compensated saddle angle for better intonation. The finish of the entire guitar was carefully refurbished using lacquers to minimize other surface blemishes, without stripping the original finish from the back, sides or soundboard. This hand-crafted guitar was built using solid Brazilian Rosewood for the back and sides, a Spanish Cedar neck with Ebony reinforcement and a solid Western Red Cedar soundboard. The binding and headstock cap are made using the finest Brazilian rosewood as well. The guitar has the original intricate rosette used on 1A models of this period.Scale length on this guitar is the traditional 664 millimeters. This is the scale Ramirez made in the 1A for players seeking high power. The nut width measures 54 millimeters. The ebony fretboard is in very good condition. The guitar has just been refretted and intonation is superb. Action on the 12th fret low E string is 3.2 millimeters and the 12th fret high E string measures 2.9 millimeters. This guitar has the original 1969 hand engraved Gold Fustero tuners in good condition. The excellent condition original label is signed by Jose Ramirez III. The Ramirez label has the original Sherry-Brenner "Segovia Model" gold labels that Jim Sherry added to 1As that he found to be superior in tone over others. What he would not have known at the time is that this instrument actually is a twin to Andres Segovia's Guitar and more than just a nice sounding 1A. Jim Sherry was the exclusive North American distributor of Ramirez Guitars during this era.Ramirez 1As of this period are considered by many to be the ultimate concert classical guitar, largely because of the regular play and international exposure of Andres Segovia's 1969 Antonio Martinez built instrument. They are much more powerful than the earlier Ramirez guitars and their greatest strength is the overall balance of tone, which marks them as a true orchestral instrument. The guitar will be carefully packed and shipped in a good condition hard shell case. Please see my other fine Classical and Flamenco guitars for sale.Click the link below for a video with sound samples of this guitar.
