Terrier - Big Red The Terrier - Extra Large - Adult - Male - Dog
Big Red was found by one of our wonderful volunteers. Poor guy went to the local animal shelter while he was looking for his owners. When the time came the volunteers just couldn't let him be put down, so they rescued him and brought him to us! Isn't he beautiful? He has plenty of love and energy to give to someone. He walks great on the leash when walked with a Gentle Leader and will heel perfectly; even when tempted with birds and squirrels, he resisted pulling. Even though he looks like a big dog, he is very managable and mellow with the proper training technique. When Big Red came in he was Heartworm positive, but after just one year of heartworm preventive he has tested negative! Yeah! Big Red loves kids, but because of his size, we feel he would be best in a home with children over the age of 8.
Volunteer Update: Whenever I visit the Center and am in the kennel area, Red always takes me by surprise. While all the other dogs bark and go nuts when they see someone new passing by their kennels, Red stays quiet and mellow. He'll just wag his tail and look up at you with his big eyes, wondering if you're there to take him out! His energy is very impressive, especially in a chaotic environment like the shelter. Because of that, I always make sure to stop and say hi to him before I have to go. He seems like the sweetest, mellowest dog ever and I wish I could take him home with me!!
Foster Update: My husband and I have had Red for a week now and we absolutely adore him. He is the sweetest dog I've ever met and so well behaved. He follows us around like he's afraid if he loses sight of us we're not going to come back. It's cute but also slightly heartbreaking. He is the best walker as well, staying right with you and rarely pulling on the leash. He listens very well and really is just full of so much love he doesn't know what to do with it. He's playful but not overly so, by which I mean jumping and rough, and loves to just run around in the backyard with us. I really can't find a fault with him and simply don't understand how he hasn't been adopted yet. Really he is just a treasure!
Foster Update: Big Red is still just as sweet as can be!
? Leash Manners: Best dog I have ever walked. Only pulls slightly in the beginning out of excitement but quickly learns and is perfect.
? Crate/House Training: Completely housebroken, we don't use the crate because he is fine roaming free.
? Socialization Great with people, not good with cats and haven't taken him around dogs.
? Energy Level and Exercise He is moderate. We walk him daily at least but he seems to like to lay around or just dash about the backyard.
? Daily Structure and Schedule We feed him once in the morning and at night and we walk him at different times of day. We take him out to go to the bathroom because we were told he might jump the fence but he has never tried.
? Confidence Level Unsure, he is submissive to us though and seems to adjust really well to new places.
? Obedience Training So far he seems to know sit, come and leave it.
? Behaviors Nope, haven't found a problem yet.
? Personality Quirks His amount of love and how well he listens. He's also a riot to watch when he gets little bursts of energy and runs around the back yard. Plus the way he lays his head on your lap, the bed, or couch and looks at you with those puppy dog eyes.
? Ideal Home No cats or small animals and possibly dogs but really other then that I think he'd be fantastic with anyone really.
The Terrier is a good-natured, amusing, extremely loyal and affectionate family pet, which is good with children and adults. Almost always obedient, it is always eager to please its master. It is an extremely courageous and intelligent guard dog that is very full of vitality. They are highly protective of their owners and the owner's property. It is usually very friendly, but has an uncanny ability to know when it needs to protect and when everything is okay. Excellent with children in the family, they have a high pain tolerance and will happily put up with rough child
